FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR REHABILITATION OF A RUN-OF-THE-RIVER CASCADE OF HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANTS I AND II ON DIVERSION CHANNEL OF VARZOB RIVER
A diversion weir on the Varzob river located approximately 800 m downstream of the village of Dagana, consists of a concrete dam with total length 60.5 m, of which 26 m are spillways. The maximum water head of this dam is only 3m, which is not enough for creating a reservoir to guarantee a steady flow of water into the diverson channel, even within the daily fluctuation in river flow, but it is enough to guarantee reliable intake of water into the channel.
The Varzob Cascade Hydroelectric Power Plant HPP I is located on the bank of the Varzob River, approximately 11 km north of downtown Dushanbe. For HPP I, the FS recommended new, high-efficiency Francis turbines, fitted to new 5.4 MW generators, which will better utilize the available water.
The Varzob Cascade Hydroelectric Power Plant HPP II is located in the downtown of the capital city of Dushanbe.The improvement to the HPP II recommended by FS includes new high-efficiency Francis turbines, fitted to new 6.8 MW generators, which will better utilize the available water.
This Feasibility Study accomplished the following:
1. Reviewed and assessed the conditions of a run-of-the-river Varzob Cascade Hydroelectric Power Plant I and II on Varzob River; confirmed the market potential for energy production.
2. Refined the project concept, including selection of new equipment, sizing of new equipment, energy generation capacity, operating practices of the facilities, IMES and spare parts required for optimal reliability; prepared a detailed construction cost estimate and schedule based on price quotes from manufacturers of major equipment and from experience data suitable for use in balance of plant equipment.
3. Undertook an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) suitable for assessment of feasibility (a more detailed EIA required during project implementation).
4. Prepared Feasibility Level project design, including completion of representative drawings and equipment selections; this design will be the basis of the Tender Design and will represent the projects selected for financing; prepared complete technical specifications for all project equipment in a manner suitable for bidding.
